OCBS is a recognized independent centre of Oxford University.

The centre promtes the study and research of the Buddhist contribution to the History of Ideas and in that context undertakes philological teaching and research into Buddhist texts across a wide range of languages. It is also centrally concerned with the study of Buddhism in society, and so is involved in related areas from Development Studies to Art History. In conjunction with So-Wide, the OCBS has from the first been committed to cross-fertilisation with other disciplines, including prominently the sciences.
